Who Am I

I am a Chicana and native New Mexican, born and raised in the South Valley in the community of Atrisco. On my father’s side we are heirs of the original Atrisco Land Grant, with roots in Tahique, Chilili and Grants. Much of my family still live in Atrisco. On my mother’s side we are from the Southern part of New Mexico. Think, Billy the Kid territory. Carrizozo and surrounding areas were my grandparent’s old stomping grounds. It’s been rumored that my Great-Grandfather Lueras actually hid Billy the Kid at his home in Reventon when “El Gabacho” was on the run. Fascinating, right?

I’m a graduate of Rio Grande High School and the University of New Mexico. I hold Bachelor of Arts degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Spanish, with emphasis in photography, film and dance. I also studied at the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Rio Piedras and Recinto de Cayey in Puerto Rico. Que chévere! I’ve had the great opportunity to do community service work in Mexico with the Raramuri and the Peace & Dignity Journeys and in Cuba with the Venceremos Brigade.

My experience is diverse and cross-cultural. I am a Founding Member and the former Creative Director of the Center for Civic Policy and Center for Civic Action, a local nonprofit working on civic engagement. I served as a Founding Member and former Interim Executive Director and Community Organizer for SAGE Council, Sacred Alliances for Grassroots Equality, a nonprofit that worked to protect Native American sacred sites. And I am also a former Vice President and Creative Director for Soltari Inc., which was a political consulting business.

Currently, I serve as a board member for AMP Concerts, one of New Mexico’s premier non-profit presenters of eclectic, world and popular music. Previously, I was the Governing Council President for South Valley Academy, a public charter school and a correspondent for “New Mexico In Focus” on KNME television. I launched Atlixco Productions LLC to further my work in the creative arts and explore the many forms of storytelling, including radio, theatre, film and social media. I perform with Las Meganenas, a repertory theatre troupe that uses performance art to raise awareness of the issues facing women. See my actor’s resume here.
